What Is HEMA-Free Gel Polish? And Why It Matters

HEMA, or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, is a small adhesion monomer found in most gel nail polishes. It helps the gel bond firmly to the nail plate, and it is also the most common trigger of gel-related contact allergy. HEMA-free gel polish is formulated without it, relying on larger molecules that are less able to penetrate skin and cause sensitisation.
That is the short answer. The longer one involves a little chemistry, a wave of European regulation and a few honest trade-offs worth understanding before you buy another bottle. Here is what HEMA actually does, why it became a problem, and how to shop with your eyes open.
What HEMA does in gel polish
Gel polish is, in essence, liquid plastic. Each bottle holds a blend of monomers and oligomers, small and medium-sized molecules that link together into a hard film when you cure them under an LED or UV lamp. HEMA is one of the workhorse monomers in that blend, and formulators have leaned on it for decades for a few good reasons.
- It grips. HEMA is a small molecule with an affinity for the slightly moist surface of the nail, so it keys into the microscopic texture of the nail plate and anchors the gel. Much of gel polish's famous longevity comes from this bond.
- It plays well with others. HEMA blends easily into formulas, helps them flow and self-level, and cures reliably under standard lamps.
- It is cheap and familiar. The same chemistry appears in dental materials and adhesives, so it has always been an easy default for formulators.
The catch is that the qualities that make HEMA an excellent adhesion promoter also make it a liability. A molecule small enough to work its way into the nail plate is small enough to work its way into skin.
Why HEMA became the most common gel allergy trigger
Properly cured gel is essentially inert. The risk sits in uncured gel: the wet polish that floods a cuticle, the smudge you wipe off a fingertip, the tacky dispersion layer left on the surface after curing. Each of those small skin contacts delivers a dose of free monomer.
Two features of (meth)acrylate allergy make this more serious than it sounds.
- Sensitisation is cumulative. You can apply gel uneventfully for years while your immune system slowly learns to recognise the molecule. Reactions begin only once that threshold is crossed, which is why an allergy can seem to arrive out of nowhere.
- Sensitisation is lifelong. Once you are allergic, you stay allergic. And because the same chemical family turns up in some dental and medical materials, an allergy acquired through nails can complicate treatment later in life.
The at-home gel boom added a third factor: undercuring. A lamp that is underpowered, ageing or simply mismatched to the polish leaves a higher fraction of monomer uncured in the film, and thick coats make it worse. What regulators have done
Europe moved first. Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1682, applying from 2021, restricted HEMA and Di-HEMA trimethylhexyl dicarbamate in nail products to professional use only. The trigger was rising allergy reports linked to gel nails. In practical terms, the EU decided these ingredients were no longer appropriate for untrained consumers to brush next to their own skin.
A second, stricter step followed. From 1 September 2025 the EU banned TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), a photoinitiator that was common in gel formulas, from nail products altogether. The ban followed TPO's classification as CMR category 1B, the EU's grouping for substances presumed carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction.
If you live in Australia or the United States, none of this binds the products on your shelf. Australia has no equivalent consumer ban, and imported products vary widely in what they contain and how honestly they are labelled. The EU's decisions still matter as a signal: a famously cautious cosmetics regulator looked at these ingredients and concluded consumers should not be handling them casually. Does HEMA-free mean allergy-proof?
No, and any brand implying otherwise is overreaching. HEMA-free gels still cure through (meth)acrylate chemistry; they simply use alternative monomers, usually larger molecules that penetrate skin less readily. Less readily is not never. Alternative monomers can still sensitise, particularly with repeated careless contact.
Choosing a HEMA-free formula lowers your exposure to the most common trigger, which is a genuinely useful reduction in risk. But the two habits that matter most apply to every gel polish, whatever the label says:
- Keep uncured gel off skin. Paint a small margin away from the cuticle and side walls, and clean any slip with a lint-free wipe before curing, never with a bare finger.
- Cure fully, every layer. Use a lamp suited to your polish, respect the full cure time, and keep coats thin so light reaches all the way through the film.
Does HEMA-free gel polish wear worse?
This is the honest trade-off question, because adhesion is exactly what HEMA was there to provide. The truthful answer: a well-formulated HEMA-free gel can wear comparably to a conventional one, but it gives you less margin for rushed technique. Application matters more, not less.
- Prep properly. Nails should be clean, lightly buffed and completely oil-free before base coat.
- Apply thin layers. Thin coats cure more completely and grip better. Solid shades in a good formula are opaque in two thin coats, so there is no need to load the brush.
- Cap the free edge. Run the brush along the tip of the nail on each coat to seal it against chips.
- Cure each layer for the full time under your LED or UV lamp, then finish with top coat.
Removal deserves the same care: buff the shine off the top coat, soak with acetone wraps for 10 to 15 minutes, and never peel gel off. Peeling takes layers of the nail plate with it, and a damaged nail holds its next set poorly.
How to read an ingredient list
"HEMA-free" on the front of a bottle is a claim; the ingredient list on the back, or on the product page, is the evidence. The same molecules travel under a few different names, so here is what to scan for:
- HEMA, also written as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or hydroxyethyl methacrylate.
- Di-HEMA trimethylhexyl dicarbamate, the related molecule the EU restricted alongside HEMA. Some products drop HEMA but quietly keep this one.
- TPO, which appears on ingredient lists as trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide.
A brand that takes its formula seriously will publish the full ingredient list and answer questions about it. If a listing shows no ingredients at all, or the label that arrives does not match the marketing, treat that as your answer.
